Let’s just say, “Three Out Of Four Is Good.” Among the players who will begin full-scale practice on North Broad Street this weekend are freshman forward Kristen McCarthy, freshman point guard BJ Williams, and junior college transfer Ranecia Fields, another point guard. Highly-rated shooting guard Miranda Tate was the only member of Temple’s 2007-08 recruiting class that decided not to join the Owls. Instead, she followed Staley to South Carolina. Fields and McCarthy appear most likely to make an impact in Cardoza’s first season. Fields is a 5-2 speed demon from De Anza College in Cupertino, Calif. She averaged 14.2 points per game last season and was an all-conference pick for league champ De Anza, which finished 23-9. Fields was also a track star at Palo Alto High School. In an article that appeared in DeAnza’s student newspaper this past season, Fields indicated that Temple was her “dream school.” Obviously, that dream didn’t die when Staley departed. McCarthy, a 6-0 forward, is another California native and a Top 50 recruit who wavered about her college decision after Staley’s departure. But she ultimately decided to stick with the Owls. Williams is a 5-7 point guard from Baltimore. She and Fields signed with Temple in the spring. McCarthy was an early signee.
