The Temple football team officially kicked off its 2007-08 recruiting effort by hosting 70 prospects for “Junior Day” this past weekend on the North Broad Street campus. Coach Al Golden recapped the weekend and discussed this year’s recruiting outlook in this interview with OwlsDaily.com.

OwlsDaily: So, how was the turnout for Junior Day this past weekend?

Golden: “We had a great turnout. We had 70 prospects that came up and more than 220 people total. A lot of local kids came up. So it was a great day. We had good weather. We had a chance to see a lot of things and get to know a lot of these kids on a more personal basis. So it was great. That’s really the way we kickoff our year. We have a Junior Day late, and then we have the five camps in June. That’s really how we start our recruiting process.”

OwlsDaily: Who’s invited to the camps in June?

Golden: “It’s an open camp, grades 7 through 12, and it’s open to anybody that wants to attend. It’s basically the first four Saturdays in June, and then one Thursday (June 21).”

OwlsDaily: What was the cumulative turnout for the camps last year?

Golden: “We had 1,400 kids in camp last year, and because of that response we added another date. So we have five one-day camps this year, and we’re hoping to eclipse the total from last year. We expect to get more than that.”

OwlsDaily: So who exactly were the 70 prospects you brought in for Junior Day, and who were the other 150 that participated?

Golden: “Seventy prospects. Seventy guys that we’re recruiting. The other (150) are family, friends, whoever comes with them.”

OwlsDaily: How many scholarships do you expect to have available this recruiting season?

Golden: “That number could vary anywhere from 22 to 25, depending on individual cases. But we expect to have a full allotment this year.”

OwlsDaily: Are you going to focus on any specific positions?

Golden: “No. We’re going to continue to keep recruiting teams. I want to recruit another team here. So that means another quarterback, another running back, a bunch of offensive linemen. I’d like to put a team out there. So, if you think of a 4-3 alignment, that means we need four D-linemen, three linebackers, four guys in the secondary.”

OwlsDaily: Do you know whether you’ll be recruiting any junior college kids?

Golden: “I have no idea right now. At this time of year we don’t really recruit the junior colleges. A lot of it has to do with need, and we’re getting into a little bit more of a flow now. So we’ll have to see. There’s more consistency now on the team than there was, obviously, a year ago. More guys are staying on the team. More guys have made the commitment to do things the right way. And more guys have obviously produced in the classroom. So there’s less holes to fix, so to speak. You could have a situation, like we did two years ago, where there’s two catastrophic injuries at fullback. A couple guys can’t play anymore and two guys have to retire. Then you might have to go get a junior college kid. That’s just part of the recruiting process.”

OwlsDaily: How do you handle splitting recruiting territories among the coaches?

Golden: “We have a lot of overlap in terms of the recruiting areas. It’s really designed so that everybody has two or three local areas. So there’s a lot of overlap. It’s not like some people. We have four guys in South Jersey, for instance. We basically have seven or eight guys in Pennsylvania. We’ve got five guys total in New Jersey.”

OwlsDaily: Isn’t it atypical for the coaches to have overlapping territories? What’s your philosophy there?

Golden: “We’re not typical. We’re designed to have a lot of overlap, so that at the different times of the year we always have a coach that’s within range. And of course we’re more regionally-based than a lot of programs. We’re trying to make our living right here between Connecticut and Northern Virginia and west of Pittsburgh. So it’s designed to have a lot of overlap.”

OwlsDaily: What about Florida? Did you get more players from Florida than you might have expected this year?

Golden: “I don’t know if it was more than I expected. It was really our first recruiting campaign here. We had two guys down there, and we’ll continue to have two guys down there. But in terms of all the stops along the way, the Carolinas, Atlanta, those types of places, we really haven’t invested there at all. So we’ll continue to have two guys in Florida. And we’ll spot Florida. We’re not going to invest heavily in Florida. But we’ll spot it, and we’ve had good results there.”
