Temple linebackers Junior Galette, Keith Holt, and John Haley learned a hard lesson this spring. Coach Al Golden held all three out of spring drills because they didn't get the job done off the field.

Junior Galette was Temple’s top freshman tackler in 2006. Keith Holt was Temple’s top freshman tackler in 2005. Neither was in uniform for the Cherry and White Game this past Saturday. Neither was walk-on sophomore John Haley, who started three games and recorded 26 stops last season.

This spring, the three linebackers got a lesson on the Golden Rule, which is -- if you don’t get the job done off the field, don’t expect to get on the field.

“We’ve got about three or four guys that didn’t play today that need to get some things squared away and see if they’re ready to make the commitment to this team,” Golden said after the spring finale, in which three of the six starting linebackers were walk-ons.

Sophomores Lamar McPherson and Omar McDonnaugh-Hales were the defensive stars for the victorious White squad. Walk-on sophomore Dave Chiavacci was the top tackler for the Cherry squad. The thing is, none of the three have ever played a snap at linebacker in a Division I college football game. (Chiavacci saw limited action on special teams last season.)

All things considered, the Owls would be that much better -- and deeper -- if Galette (52 tackles in 2006), Holt (49 career tackles), and Haley were in the mix.

Will that be the case when preseason camp opens in August?

That’s up to them.

“They’re still in school,” Golden said. “They’ve got to make some decisions to do things the right way, to do things the way their teammates are doing, and if they do that we’ll welcome them back. But we’re not going to do it on anybody else’s terms but ours.”
