The Temple men’s basketball team will “Turn Back The Clock” with a home game at McGonigle Hall this season. On Monday, December 28, the Owls will return to their former home to host Bowling Green, Temple Athletic Director Bill Bradshaw confirmed to OwlsDaily.com.
“It’s in a difficult time of the semester break and the holidays,” Bradshaw said. “So we decided it might be a nice opportunity to turn the clock back and play a game in McGonigle Hall.”
McGonigle was Temple’s basketball home from 1969 to 1997. It continues today as the home venue for several Olympic sports.
For the December 28 contest, the Owls are planning lots of nostalgia, which will be announced at a later date.
The one-night shift from The Liacouras Center to McGonigle Hall is being made mostly for financial reasons. The athletic department has to pay to use The Liacouras Center.
McGonigle Hall’s seating capacity is 3,900, which is more than enough to handle the expected crowd for a late-December visit from Bowling Green.
On a related note, while Coach Fran Dunphy’s team will play one game at McGonigle Hall this season, the Temple women’s basketball team will play multiple games at their former home. The Liacouras/McGonigle split for the women’s team has not been finalized.
