It’s been a busy offseason for Coach Tonya Cardoza, who lost two members of her recruiting class and saw the departure of shooting guard Lindsay Kimmel, who transferred to Villanova. Recently, though, Cardoza added two notable transfers – one from Virginia Tech and the other from Wright State.

The newest members of the Temple women’s basketball team are 6-2 center Brittany Lewis and 5-7 guard Shey Peddy. Both will be eligible in 2010-11.

Lewis averaged 3.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game as a freshman at Virginia Tech last season. She played 8.5 minutes per game.

Peddy averaged 12.1 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game as a sophomore at Wright State, where she was a second team All-Horizon League pick and a member of the league’s All-Defensive team. Peddy’s freshman year was even better. In 2007-08, the Boston native averaged 16.7 points, 3.4 assists, and 3.2 steals per game, earning first team All-Horizon League distinction as well as being named the league’s Newcomer of the Year.

The Owls added Lewis and Peddy after losing signees Alyssa Bennett and Tiffany Davis, who were once teammates at Hampton (Va.) High School.

Bennett, a 6-2 forward who spent her senior year at Oak Hill Academy, signed with Temple in the spring. She had previously committed to West Virginia. Now, Bennett is headed to Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla., which two years ago sent Shanea Cotton to North Broad Street.

Davis, a 5-5 guard who teamed with Bennett on Hampton’s 2007 State Championship squad, is going the prep school route this fall.

Cardoza’s freshman class now includes 6-3 center Victoria Macauley from Staten Island, N.Y., and 6-0 forward Natasha Thames from Port Huron, Mich.

Kimmel, Cotton, and power forward Shenita Landry are the major losses from last year’s Temple squad, which earned the program’s sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament bid.

Double-figure scorers LaKeisha Eaddy and Shaqwedia Wallace and frontcourt contributors Kristen McCarthy, Kristie Watkins-Day, and Jasmine Stone are among the key returnees.
