However, just because Texas extended a verbal offer to the 6-foot-2, 245-pound West Deptford High (Westville, N.J.) running back doesn't mean the Longhorns jumped to the top of an offer list that also includes Rutgers, Wisconsin, South Carolina, Michigan State, Temple and Boston College. He is also hearing from Notre Dame, Michigan, Alabama and Tennessee.
"I'm enjoying everything right now and taking it day by day," Owens said. "I'm interested in seeing any school. I want to get out and see every school."
However, finding the time to talk to coaches and make visits is another matter.
"I barely have time to talk to anybody because I'm always working out," Owens said. "I'm getting ready for track and field. I do the shot put and I'm going to run the 100 meters."
Owens doesn't have a favorite, but one of the schools recruiting him the hardest is Rutgers.
"I've been talking to the same few coaches," said Owens, whose contact with defensive line coach Jim Panagos. "I talked to coach (Kyle) Flood a couple of times. I know they have a great tradition of being a family, and they are very good academically."
If Owens needs to get the ins and outs of the school, he doesn't have to go far.
"My sister goes there and she loves it," Owens said. "She's always telling me, ‘Don't go there because of me.' She wants me to be happy and chose for myself.' "
Owens is coming off a junior season in which he ran for 1,701 yards and 26 touchdowns on 212 carries, and schools took notice. Texas offered him in late January.
"I grew up a Texas fan," he said. "I was really shocked. I grew up liking them and it shocked me."
However, when it comes to many of the other schools, Owens doesn't know much about them.
"South Carolina has been sending me mail," he said. "I know the basic stuff, and (Marcus) Lattimore is in the draft. With Wisconsin, the same thing as South Carolina. Michigan State, I'm still doing a little research on them."
"Notre Dame has been sending me some mail. Alabama has been sending me some mail. Tennessee and Michigan are a few more schools sending me mail."
Owens found some down time Thursday to take in Temple's basketball game, but he said not to read too much into it.
"It was a recruiting visit, but everybody is the same right now," he said. "Until I get out to see campus and see what they all have to offer, everybody is the same."
Owens visited Rutgers in December, but he said he doesn't have any visits for the spring or summer set up.
